Harmful for Budgies
Category: Articles
Avoid all the things on the below list – they are toxic or otherwise harmful for budgies:
teflon (Do not use pans or space heaters coated in teflon. At high temperatures they give off fumes that are harmful to you and deadly to birds.)
canned veggies
non-organic fruits & veggies (These may have been sprayed with pesticides. Budgie’s are very small and susceptible to the tiniest bit of poisons.)
avocados
eggplant
rhubarb
potato leaves
tomato leaves
bean plant leaves
apple seeds
alcohol
coffee
tea
chocolate
tobacco
apricot seeds
cherry seeds
peach seeds
pear seeds
plum seeds
avocado pits
peanuts
mold
Other things to consider:
- Do not let your budgie come out to fly until you have made the room budgie-proof by covering windows and mirrors they could fly into.
- Remove any other animals from the room (cats, dogs, covering rats cages, larger parrots, or other small animals that could chew toes, etc).
- Remove any open containers of liquid a curious budgie could fall into.
- Remove poisonous plants or other things a budgie could chew.
- Make sure all doors and windows are closed.
- Turn off ceiling fans – budgies have died when accidentally flying into them or being hit by fan blades.
- Make sure all toys are clean and have no strings pulled loose – keep toys trimmed. Budgies can catch their toes in threads or even get their necks tangled.
- Use twist-ties or similar closures to close cage doors and food doors. A clever budgie can easily open these doors only to have them close quickly onto their neck and trap them. Frightened, they can flail around and break their necks.
